Comments from the Athletes at the Press Conference

Comments from the Athletes at the Press Conference:

Seiko Golden Grand Prix 2020 Tokyo has held the Pre-Meet Press Conference at the Japan National Stadium on August 22. For COVID 19 mitigation measures, the press conference was held online, divided into two sessions. First session featured, Yoshihide KIRYU, Ryota YAMAGATA, Shuhei TADA, Aska CAMBRIDGE, and in the second session, Ran URABE (W1500m), Sumire HATA (W LJ) and Haruka KITAGUCHI (W JT). The athletes mentioned on how they look forward to the Meet tomorrow, and their latest status. Comments from the athletes are as follows;

【First Session: Men’s Track Events】

Shuhei TADA Men 100m.
The early part of my season wasn’t as I hoped it would be but my condition is gradually improving. I want to race well and win the race.
In the previous race (Aug 12: 10.37 +0.5), I was too tense during the race, so for tomorrow, I want to stay relaxed during the race so I’ve been working on that. I will focus only on my race and relaxed.
First time running in this Stadium so I want to check the feel of the track surface, the kind of return I'll get from it. When I go on the track later this afternoon.
I haven't ran on the surface yet but my condition is good, getting better. I think I could get close to my PB. This is going to be High level race. I will focus on my lane and that will lead to a good result.

Yoshihide KIRYU: Men 100m
This year, with the world in this situation, we don't know how many more races we'll be able to run this year so I will run each and every race with all I've got, and so that people watching would feel the energy.
This year I ran 100m once (Aug 1: 10.04 +1.4) , 200m (Aug 10: 20.51 +1.4) once, I am working on my top speed this year, I hope to race with top speed in mind.
I didn't really have a memorable race in the old National Stadium but I hope to make it memorable in the New National Stadium
I will go on the track after this press conference to get the feel for the track. But if you're going to win in this lineup, it'll have to be a fast time anyway, I will just focus on winning.

Ryota YAMAGATA Men 100m
This is my first race of the season. I hope to race and show progress of my comeback. Last season was not how I imagined it to be, I want to have a good race and show how much progress and improvement I'm making. Last year’s time at the SEIKO GGP was 10.11 so I want to finish faster than last year.
I couldn't participate in the Stadium Opening Event so this really the first time I get to run here. I want to get the feel of the stadium and the surroundings. From the warm up track to the main stadium, the routine from warm up to the race and build an image of myself in the Olympic Games next year.

Aska CAMBRIDGE Men 100m
I had a quality race in my first race (Won the Tokyo Championships in July with 10.22). Last year, I really couldn't run the way I wanted to for quite some time. Far from what I had in mind. This year will be different. Looking to race the way I want to. In the early part of the race, my upperbody rose too early and in later part of the race, I was a bit off on my movement and I've working on these points. I am improving from the last race so I am targeting for around my PB of under 10.10 (PB 10.08 in 2017).
I will be looking out for the others but mainly I will focus on my own race. My strong point is my race at the end, so I wanto execute properly at the late stage of the sprint, I'll have a chance of winning.
I had the chance to participate in the Stadium Opening Event but I want to feel the atmosphere of the stadium and leave with a good image after tomorrow.

【Second Session】

Ran URABE Women 1500m
I am so grateful for the Organizers to have this event in this situation. And I am really excited to race in the new National Stadium. I want to have this feeling of excitement drive me forward and hope to improve my PB (4:14.52) and the national record (4:07.86, Yuriko Kobayashi 2006).
Tomorrow, I want to get the feel of the new track. I want to feel the atmosphere and run imagining “how will it be on the day of the Olympic Games.”. I am originally from Tokyo and grew up 3 kilometers from the stadium. The National Stadium meant special for me for a long time and I hope to race well in this very stadium.

Haruka KITAGUCHI Women Javelin Throw
I am really looking forward to my first competition of the season in the New National Stadium. It is the Olympic venue so I hope to get a feel for this place and compete tomorrow. In terms of my training progress, I am not yet at a stage of renewing my National Record (66.00, 2019) but I will do my best out there. Tomorrow I will be checking how hard the javelin’s landing area will be, or how the wind goes through the stadium.
The local track re-opened in June, and that was when I restarted my event specific training. I was taking it slow and easy as I had no competitions confirmed. With the Olympic Games postpone for a year, I will have one year to work on and improve. My step is the point of focus. I didn’t change the total number of steps but I have put two more steps during the phase in which I’m facing forward, and cut down my cross-step, two steps. I did get an advice that I go back to my old steps but I’ve already forgotten the rhythm of my old steps so I’m beyond point of no return. I’m just going to go with my new step.

Sumire HATA Women Long Jump
Tomorrow will be my second competition of the season. Normally I never feel nervous before a competition but I’m so nervous now. With the Seiko Golden Grand Prix taking place at the New National Stadium, the Olympic venue, I am so psyched. I hope to control this nervousness and feelings of excitement and have a good jump tomorrow.
It’s a big stadium so I will be imagining how will it be when the stadium is packed with spectators. I will make sure to check the feel of the runway also.

Seiko Golden Grand Prix was originally scheduled to be held on May 10 but with the spread of the novel coronavirus, it has been postponed. For Athletics in Japan, it resumed competition from July. Seiko GGP is made possible by implementing the “JAAF Guidance for Restarting Athletics Activities”, making the meet a spectator-less event, and implementing various mitigation measures
This is year the Meet could not invite the top athletes from outside Japan but as the first major outdoor Athletics competition in Japan, but have the very best Japanese athletes entered. This marks the re-start toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. To support the high school athletes in Japan who lost the opportunity to participate in their pinnacle summer championship , Seiko GGP has selected high school athletes to participate in the same competition as the top athletes, as part of the “Dream Lane” initiative.
